Daniel W. Fletcher Opens Summer Pop-up in Margate, on England’s Kent Coast

THE SEA, THE SEA: The Americans have the Hamptons, South Beach and Southern California, whereas the Europeans have Capri, Cannes and Mykonos.

But a summer season seaside pop-up in England? That’s a tricky one.

This week, the designer Daniel W. Fletcher, a star of Netflix’s “Next in Fashion,” rose to the problem, opening a brief retailer in Margate, a seashore resort on the Kent coast overlooking the English Channel.

Once a magnet for painters corresponding to JMW Turner, and poets together with T.S. Eliot, who wrote a part of “The Waste Land” there, the city fell on laborious instances within the ’80s as British holidaymakers opted to journey overseas.

Of late, although, it’s been present process a revival because of the opening, a decade in the past, of the Turner Contemporary artwork gallery, and an inflow of London hipsters who’ve been opening bars, outlets and eating places. “I spent my childhood summer holidays visiting the British seaside with my family, so for me there is something very nostalgic about it,” stated Fletcher when requested why he selected Margate specifically. “There’s such a vibrant creative community in Margate, and I’ve been coming here for a few years now, and have fallen in love with the area.”

Fletcher’s new retailer, at 18 Marine Drive, proper by the seashore, will inventory the designer’s classics, the autumn assortment, and unique items impressed by the city. It may even carry items from his first devoted girls’s assortment, which launched for fall 2021.

Open by way of July and August, the shop may even host “quilting and arts workshops, queer book club meetings, poetry readings and other events” in partnership with native artists and companies, the designer stated.

The retailer has a Beach Shop that provides Fletcher’s vary of recycled frisbees, paper windmills, DWF sticks of laborious sweet wrapped in compostable wrapping, natural cotton jerseys and swim shorts made utilizing recycled plastics collected from the ocean.

Fletcher has drawn inspiration from Margate’s seashores, and the Kent coast, for the DWF seasonal marketing campaign that options the rising actor William Franklin Miller and has been photographed by Fabien Kruszelnicki.
